Post-Pandemic unwinding of Medicaid (HUSKY)

The federal Covid-19 pandemic public health emergency that guaranteed Medicaid coverage to hundreds of thousands of people is coming to an end.

During the pandemic, many people lost some or all of their normal source of income making them eligible for Medicaid (called HUSKY in CT). As the pandemic evolved, Medicaid instituted a policy, known as “continuous enrollment,” that prevented states from kicking people off of Medicaid, even if they no longer qualified or failed to update their eligibility information.

On March 31, "continuous enrollment" will end and a process called “unwinding,” will begin where everyone whose Medicaid coverage had, in the past, been extended as part of the public health emergency will need to reevaluate their eligibility. Where possible, Medicaid will auto-renew many people based on information received from other governmental sources, like the IRS. This process is called "passive renewal".

However, many whose income has risen above the income threshold will no longer be eligible for Medicaid and will be given an opportunity to update their account in AccessHealthCT.com or Healthcare.gov .
